The Lloyd Andrews Residence is a worthy winner of the award for Best Environmentally Sustainable Residential Design. Particular effort was concentrated by the designer on using both passive and active systems to provide for an all-round result. Low embodied energy sustainable materials such as straw bale walls, timber, local stone, concrete floor slab and smart roof design were just a few inclusions. A recycled waste system for gardens and toilet flushing was provided, as well as the incorporation of a very smart ‘cooling pond’ as part of the heating and cooling system. The dwelling, designed for two semi-retired professionals with frequent visitors, not only looks good, but is a great match for its environment. The design incorporates a central living area separating two guest facilities. The main bedroom, study and amenities are positioned at opposite ends of the building. The result has more than met the clients’ expectations.
