Ecoliv Display Home

The "Ecoliv Display" in Wonthaggi pipped the opposition to win the award for "Best Environmentally Sustainable Design - Residential". The design principle here was that "big is not better", and that living green is not as complex or expensive as it seems.

Despite nestling at the junction of a shopping strip and residential streetscape, this standard allotment block shape and size has become nothing but ordinary. The dwelling design is low and simple, and allows transportability. It does not dominate its surrounds, and is set in a low-maintenance water-saving garden that, when established, will no doubt complement its form.

The home uses plantation timber framing and floor linings, and the front entry steps are reclaimed timber from a local jetty. 900mm eaves provide additional shading from summer sun, and the use of double-glazed windows and sliding door units provide for both thermal heat gain and loss, and additionally when opened, and combined with louvers, provide for extensive cross-flow ventilation, easily achieved in this narrow house. Photovoltaic panels provide electricity, and a10,000 litre water-tank provides water for the home. Minimal use of monitored low CFL downlights and low VOC paints, coatings and carpets increase air quality. This is clearly a simple but very comfortable home which has met all expectations.
