The client wanted a light filled contemporary family home created through the addition of a new lounge, kitchen dining area while honouring the heritage value of the original Federation style house. The project has converted a dark and dingy house into a vibrant sun filled home. The original closed internal spaces are contrasted with an arrangement of new higher volumes that reference the original building and connect to external spaces. The idea of garage and the lean-to played an important role in the development of the scheme.

“The project has provided a new open and light filled living area to the rear which was to make use of the large rear yard,” said the Judges. “The connection bridge between the old and new provides an excellent form of transition.”

A large exposed steel frame and fascia allows the opening of the living areas to the outside timber deck. The unique canopy design not only provides protection from the elements, but is in itself an integral part of the form.

The extensive use of timber creates a cosy feel, and the large glass doors and seemingly floating glass panels above the kitchen add further to the connection between inside and out.

The kitchen is well connected to the living areas – a must for family life – and is designed with clean lines and materials.

The palate throughout encourages light diffusion, without being too sterile. A unique but practical solution has been provided in a design which stands out above the rest.

The clients wanted to add a new wing into their home, reflecting their lifestyle. The Noosa Villa family home was considered a close second in this category; so much so, that the Judges considered it worthy of a commendation. It's hard to see what remains of the original dwelling with this new resort-feel house designed with colours, and materials used smartly for a blend of modern and Balinese. What a transformation! The feeling is relaxed, but practical, and the living areas are spacious without loosing that cosy and intimate ambience you need to make it a family home. The house is also light filled, and opens itself well to the outside entertainment areas. Who needs to go on a holiday when you can have one at home!
