Courses in Building Design


In 2009, the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) was introduced into the TAFE curriculum (National Code 21953VIC) and is delivered by 11 TAFEs in Victoria. This is now the only course recognised for persons seeking registration in the category of Draftsperson, Class of Building Design (Architectural). Persons who hold a qualification in any predecessor to this course (eg Diploma in Building Design & Drafting, Diploma of Building Design & Technology, etc) may apply to their nearest TAFE Institute to top-up their qualification to meet the standards required of the Advanced Diploma.

The Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural), which is a nationally accredited course, is generally undertaken by 2½ years' (1,550 hours) full-time study. Applicants must have achieved Year 12, and must have literacy, numeracy, and visual interpretation skills. To apply for this course, applicants must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) application process, details of which are available at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August.

The course is designed to prepare students for a career as an architectural building designer or draftsperson. Skills and knowledge covered may include architectural design, building construction of residential and non-residential buildings, environmental sustainability, drawing using manual and computer aided design in 2D and 3D. Students gain valuable skills from the design stage through to selection of materials, presentation of the design and management of the project.

Subjects covered in the course include:

  • contribute to the implementation of strategies to control OHS risk;
  • undertake small business planning;
  • work safely in the construction industry;
  • undertake site survey and analysis to inform design process;
  • apply structural and construction technology to the design of residential buildings;
  • apply structural and construction technology to the design of commercial buildings;
  • comply with codes and standards in the design of residential buildings;
  • comply with codes and standards in the design of commercial buildings;
  • design safe buildings;
  • design sustainable buildings;
  • integrate services layout into design documentation;
  • and more.

Career opportunities offered to graduates of this course include working as an architectural draftsperson within a design practice or for a building contractor. Upon acquiring experience, graduates may choose to set up their own design practice.
