Passive Solar and NatHERS: Understand How North Windows Work

This webinar presentation by Tony Isaacs deals with Passive Solar Design principles. North windows warm up a house in winter and reduce the need for heating. So, the more north glass the better? Not always. Did you know that, beyond a certain point, adding north glass will actually INCREASE heating energy use? And this point depends on thermal mass, the type of glazing, floor coverings and even the colour of the window frame. If north windows are double glazed, however, you continue to save heating energy with larger window areas, but the benefits are less and less the greater the area of north glass gets. In re-writing Sustainability Victoria's Energy Smart Housing manual, Tony's research uncovered a number of new findings that will help you understand how NatHERS tools value traditional passive solar design principles.
