Judging Criteria

Entries are judged on the quality of the design process, as being a balanced integration of inherent elements that are incorporated into the design of the project, including aesthetics, environmental considerations, feasible cost solution, social and technical considerations. A major focus is on design excellence, taking into account architectural form, neighbourhood or landscape context response, skilful resolution of unusual or project-specific constraints, innovative use of materials and/or technology, and solutions which demonstrate cost-effectiveness of design responses.  Winners in each category will feature a harmonious and outstanding integration of these considerations, and will also demonstrate innovation in any (or all) of these considerations.

The major award - the Building Design of the Year - is selected as the most outstanding submission from the major award category winners.

The Judges also reserve the right to not bestow an award in any specific category, should entry submissions for any category not be of a standard deemed to reflect the standards expected in the competition.
