was on Smart, Sustainable Housing.  Attracting a capacity audience, it featured Brett Blacklow, the Queensland-based designer of the The Smarter Small Home and also featured John Eckert, who spoke about Mirvac’s award-winning Harmony 9,
9-star energy home. The event was supported by presentations from
James Hardie and Air-Cell Insulation.

This CPD seminar, held on 10 May 2010
dealt with planning issues.  Ashley Thompson from Clause:1 Planning –
a specialised town planning consultancy – spoke about “Getting Through the Planning Permit Application Process Faster”.  His valuable insight into the legislative procedural requirements that apply to the planning regime in Victoria was highly acclaimed. He also offered some practical hints and tips designed to get your planning applications determined faster.

This seminar, held 12 April 2010
dealt with fire safety requirements and design.  Angus Mair, the Fire Safety Officer at the CFA Westernport Area, spoke about portable fire hydrants, fire hose reels, and portable fire extinguishers, highlighting the importance of location of these items at places easily accessible by occupants of buildings who may be potential fire victims. Michael Duce from Clevertronics also spoke about emergency lighting.

BDAV CPD seminar featured well-known glass industry identities, Gary Smith and Leon Stevenson, who spoke about performance and compliance issues related to windows and glass. The event - which was highly acclaimed - was supported by a presentation from Architectural Window Systems.

Presented on 9 November 2009, this BDAV CPD seminar featured building consultant, Stuart McLennan, who dealt with a number of topical building matters, including the ABCB Glazing Calculator, Regulation 608 compliance, Bushfire Attack Level Assessment, and related matters.

Presented by Jeffrey Wilson, Partner, Deacons Lawyers on 7 September 2009, spoke about contract administration, using the new suite of BDAV Contracts as the primary focus. He also explained the Security of Payments legislation and how it works in Victoria.

Presented on 7 August 2006, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured Boris Iskra of TPC Solutions, who spoke about changes to the Timber Framing Standard from the 2000 edition to AS1684-2006, and also spoke about durability, new pine grades, etc.

Presented on 2 April 2007, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured Michael Shaw, then with IrwinConsult, who outlined the requirements for energy efficiency provisions for non-residential buildings (Class 3-9 buildings)

Presented on 19 June 2007, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured BDAV Executive Officer, Brian Morison, on the rights and obligations of designers in contractual arrangements with clients. The presentation also dealt with debt collection.

Presented on 11 February 2008, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured sustainability expert, Mark Sanders of Third Ecology Architects, who discussed the ‘ins and outs’ of energy ratings (and other sustainability features) in relation to three renovation projects which demonstrate the ease in achieving energy and water savings in renovation projects.

Presented on 3 March 2008, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured BDAV Executive Officer, Brian Morison, who gave an update on Section 28 of the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004 which relates to the Duty of Designers of Buildings and Structures that are used as workplaces, followed by case studies by Roy Hodgson, FBDAV.

Presented on 2 June 2008, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured an expert panel of planning professionals who presented a panel discussion illustrating key principles for the success of planning permit applications. Presentations included how to interpret the Heritage Overlay (HO) controls and their affects on your application, including how to find HO details specific to your site; Local Planning Policy and its affect; when you can demolish or not; and when you can construct and carry out works.

Presented on 8 September 2008, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured Geoff Hoare, FBDAV, in which he outlined some interesting research findings conducted locally and overseas about the deterioration in the quality of documentation. Geoff also referenced information that emerged from a recent Building Commission audit which identified deterioration of documentation quality by registered draftspersons.

Presented on 9 February 2009, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured sustainability expert Tim Adams, MBDAV, who outlined the basics on how to achieve 5-Star, including the key contributors to rating performance and the essential thermal design rules for Victoria’s climate.

Presented on 2 March 2009, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured sustainability guru, Dick Clarke, who highlighted factors that should be taken into account to achieve environmentally responsible design. The presentation deals with geology, climate, life-forms, as well as materials, colours, shapes, and unique characteristics, all of which impact smart design decisions for sustainable design.

In the wake of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, this BDAV CPD Seminar, held on 6 April 2009, featured Paul England of Bodycote Warringtonfire (Aus) Pty Ltd, who spoke about the new bushfire standard and related matters, including the new test methods. In addition, John Shaw from the Building Commission spoke about the regulations and related matters.

Presented on 4 May 2009, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured two of Australia's leading energy efficiency experts who presented the key features of two energy modelling tools – FirstRate5 and BERS – and demonstrated how they work. Valuable for anybody involved in residential designs who also conducts or co-ordinates energy ratings for their clients.

Presented on 1 June 2009, this BDAV CPD Seminar featured a panel of four of Australia's most successful design professionals who shared some of their marketing advice, including "what's worked" and "what hasn't" in terms of their marketing. This presentation provides a great opportunity for designers to re-assess their own marketing strategy.

Presented by Brian Morison, BDAV’s Executive Officer, on 6 July 2009, this presentation features a case that centres around a 50mm design error in a balustrade, which resulted in the claimant becoming a paraplegic. 10 professionals – including builder, architect, building surveyor and project manager – incurred charges totaling more than $3M as a result of discrepancies and inconsistencies in design drawings. The case highlights the importance of design professionals never underestimating their professional role.
