Tralee – Moonah Links

This is a distinctive Australian home with ‘eco cred’ and lifestyle inter-changeability. Located on the secluded coastal Moonah Links Golf Course, ‘Tralee’ offers options and opportunities – whether it be to live and work from home, a weekend getaway, or to entertain gatherings of family and friends.

Nestled among Teatree at lane’s end, the site falls steeply off to the north picturesque views, overlooking the 16th tee of the Moonah Links Golf Course.

The challenge was to design an elevated street level entrance, but with living and gathering zones anchored down at the lower contours, all the while capturing the golf course panorama and north light.

Skilful design and bold construction techniques, softened with organic material elements, all combine to shrug off the site steepness and rest easily on the contour. The glazed and timber battened cube forms articulate and lure the north golf course panorama deep into the interior and alfresco, while all habitat zones orbit and interlink, spanning and freefalling about the lower gathering spaces, separated only by light filled volume and space rather than walls and floors.

The interior is a palette of rough surfaced, rusty bolted recycled wharf timbers and cigar pigmented off-form concrete wall massing elements, adding crunch to the slick sharp edged modern décor colours, fixtures and fittings. These, washed in with soft furnishing neutrals, reverberate the modern architectural coastal design.

The project not only won this category, as well as awards for interior design, and innovative use of glass, it also won the 2010 Building Design of the Year.
